I was overcome with a wave of nostalgia and reread some of my old HP fics today. What a strange thing. In a bold strike of irony, it turns out that the name Evelyn Ransom is also popular in the HP fandom for female OCs and RP characters.
In the beginning I used to write fics... now, I suppose I'm in one. |

| | Churchly | ] | And shockingly the reviewer didn't enjoy it. Favourite bits:
- The story is crass, and doesn't redeem itself.
- I spent half a minute skimming Irvine Welsh's wiki page to see where the background to your parody came from, and I haven't read any of his works...
- Hagrid, the big friendly giant, telling someone that they're fucking cunts?
- This isn't a Harry Potter fic.
- Nothing happens.
- Best of luck in the future.
You can read the rest of the review here or you can read the incredibly polarising 'Lads' Day Out' here.
Oh, Hagrid, don't let the cunts get you down. |

I would just like to point out that I never needed to create sock-puppets to say mean things about my fics. People did it naturally. I always hoped the Hardcore Valentines would generate some high-drama furor but people enjoyed! So peanuts for authorial intent.
In fic related news: I am back to work on "Lads and Dads." Oh, and everything else as well. |

| | Do the Hippogriff | ] | So, has everyone seen GoF yet? Don't worry, this post isn't so much about it. I don't think I have anything really useful to say about it -- except 'Yay for Jarvis!' No, my dear LJ friends, I am here to shamelessly beg your support in the fanfiction arena...
Last year, as some of you know, Fictionalley held a special Lyrics-based Holiday 'Be Timely Challenge.' Being a mean-spirited person with a great hatred of general happiness, I took up the challenge and answered it with my story 'Knight Bus' a short tale of human desperation and depravity.
Now, some twelve months later, Fictionalley has opened the voting for the challenge -- there are two catergories: 'Most Creative Use of Lyrics' and 'Most Humorous Use of Lyrics.' Though I cannot say my use of lyrics were in any way creative, it will not stop me from trying to wheedle votes out of any of you that might have a Fictionalley account. And don't think I'm above bribery either!
Here's the pitch -- You vote for my story for 'Most Creative Use of Lyrics' and I will give you... a something fanfictiony for the Holidays! Free exchange - one vote, one story! And whilst you are in a voting mood, might I suggest dear friend Darren Spooner's 'Full Moon Madness' for the 'Most Humorous Use of Lyrics'? It is very silly. I don't know if Darren is paying for votes...come to think of it, he already owes me several stories...Anyway, go read the stories.
Vote 'Knight Bus' by Evelyn Ransom for 'Most Creative Use of Lyrics' and Vote 'Full Moon Madness' by Darren Spooner for 'Most Humorous Use of Lyrics'
And if you would like your own Holiday Giftfic, just let me know. |

I knew, that one day, the wisdom of using Jarvis Cocker (in Darren Spooner guise) as the face of the weirdsisters community would be clear to everyone in the fandom. When the rumour that the ex-Pulp frontman would be contributing songs to the soundtrack began making the rounds I thought it was to good to be true... But friends, I have heard it.
Get thee to the official WB soundtrack webpage and rock! |

| | Supernature | ] | I've received some emails asking where my old Frank Longbottom series could be read -- mostly the Gangland stuff. Unfortunately, I never reposted most of it after the original site it was on went down and never came back up for air.
A few months ago, I began re-editing Gangland and uploading it at FA.org As I continue that work I will keep you all posted. But for the now, if you want Evelyn Ransom's take on Frank Longbottom, you have three options:
'The Brank: A Punishment Job' -- a short pre-Gangland Frank. Scenes of rape, violence and immorality. Does not show our favourite Auror in the best light. Posted at hp_hardcore, probably the equivalent of NC-17.
'Only You' -- A slightly different characterisation of Frank from my usual. Some Bellatrix action tossed in. Up at FA.org, so you know it can't be that hard.
and,
'Gangland' -- The old standard. Frank Longbottom investigates the murder of a colleague for the Ministry's special crime division. Only two chapters up at FA.org. The full story will be posted as I cleanse it of terrible writing. |

So, since we writers get to be band frontman 364 days out of the year, I thought it would be fair if for 24 hours we took our beta readers out from behind the drums and in the words of Albus Dumbledore let us 'big'em up!' (HBP, p. 357)

My beta reader and super friend is the always fashionable Nina pottermemoirs. She is a Canadian in good standing (but for the fact that she has recently married an American). As such, she has a wealth of Canadian pop-music knowledge. She is my co-moderator for both hp_hardcore and hp_canada and has many lovely Vincent Crabbe icons. Whilst Nina has never posted any of her own fanfiction, prefering to re-grammatify mine (tough job, yeah), I know that she secretly writes tales of Pansy/Cho and Pansy/Neville. If only she'd let anyone read them! She ships (in order of importance): Snape/Lupin, Tom/Ginny, Malfoys/Weasleys, Crabbe/Goyle and most recently, Draco/Myrtle. Her favourite book was POA and Alan Rickman's voice makes her giggle. As a marginal indie HP fanficcer it is comforting to know that at least one person will always read my stories. Even the ones that are all OCs.
I suggest you all go and friend her, but as she is such a shy rabbit don't expect to see much at first, she keeps that journal locked tighter than Minerva McGonagall's sweet box. |

| Fanfiction as Art |
[Aug. 5th, 2005|11:28 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | confused | ] |
| [ | Current Music |
| | Mile End | ] | Let me begin by citing a well known fact: Fanfiction is crap. It is, as we know, insipid, unoriginal, contrived, and oft times badly spelt. I dispute none of this, I merely ask, 'Can this crap be art?'
As authors of Fanfiction, we are first and foremost thieves. We happily purloin the creation of another, filching worlds, characters, hats, plots and wit that we do not possess. Fanfiction is plagiarism and it is naughty.
Now, does this mean we are savages without benefit of conscience or personal style? No, say I, we follow in the footsteps of that most spectacular species of theatre: the Commedia dell'Arte! Pinching other people's work has a strong literary and theatrical tradition (after all, who is Lockhart if not another incarnation of the Commedia's dashing Captain or Plautus's Miles Gloriosus?) Expect an essay any day now.
Certainly, our backgrounds are cardboard and our characters are borrowed templates. And I would be the first to admit that to have read two distinct Fandom plots is a rare achievement, to read three is a case of double vision, but it is not the materials used in studio that determines the artistic worth of the final product. Can we as authors take these fell-off-a-truck ingredients and weave them into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts?
Yes, yes, and yes! I would even say that it is our obligation to ensure that our work has some artistic merit to make up for the cannibalistic method of its creation. Stories that are written to titillate shippers are worthless. Stories that intend to explore vague aspects of canon are worthless. Clever character studies, interesting plots, thoughtful treatments of serious issues are worthless. Pack'em in, they don't mean a thing.
There is only one thing that can make fic writing worthwhile, the Philosopher's Stone of the literary world, that immutable sliver of truth that turns mere words into life.
I don't really want to dwell on Aesthetics here, but I can assure you, if you have seen or experienced a work of Art you have known it. Art does not sneak up on to or pass you on the street only for you to turn back three blocks down and scratch your head saying, 'That was Art was it?' Just so, when you create art, you know it. Oh, and art can be bad, don't get me wrong, this isn't as pretentious as it sounds, I'm not hinting that any of us will ever reach the accomplished and inspired thievery of a Moliere, I suggesting that when you, as an author write, Fanfiction or no, you reach out for that truth.
Do not write to tell a story. Do not write to win fans. Do not write to fulfill your wishes. Don't write at all. Unless...
You are willing to sacrifice it all on the altar of artistic truth for no other reason than that it is right. And if by sheer act of will you can pull something pure out of all the crap then perhaps you will have, in a small way, begun to redeem the thief in us all. |

Tell us that Draco is not aroused at the sight of a woman's pair of strappy stiletto heels. Pretend that Sirius enjoys sex only in the missionary position. Insinuate that Dumbledore has never done heroin. Categorically state that Snape would not rape Harry, even if the right conditions presented themselves. Insist that Tonks does not have a thing for Japanese rope bondage. Suggest that Hermione finds the idea of fisting abhorrent. Reveal in an interview that she thinks anyone who believes Lucius has a balloon-popping fetish is delusional.
